Runecrafting is one of the least liked skills in OSRS because of the slow rate of reaching level 99. The training methods require lots of running, which can become frustrating when your energy depletes. However, the skill is extremely profitable at the later stages, which compensates for the slow hourly experience.

This is because we’ll be going over all the necessary quests and items that you’ll need for the best XP rates. What Is Runecrafting?

Runecrafting is a F2P and members skill, allowing players to craft runes from rune essence or pure essence at various Runecrafting altars. The skill synchronizes with Magic extremely well since you need runes to cast spells. Therefore, if you’re an iron man, you’ll want to level your Runecrafting to at least 77 to create blood runes for PVM.

The skill requires players to travel to mysterious runes located all around Gielinor with the appropriate talisman. These are keys used to teleport inside and imbue the rune essence or pure essence on the altar to create runes.

Items Needed for Runecrafting

There are a few must-needed items to train Runecrafting. Obtaining them is simply because you can head to the Grand Exchange and purchase your supplies there. Alternatively, you can go to Aubury’s Rune Shop, which is located in Southeastern Varrock directly South of the Eastern bank. He will sell you rune essence and pure essence. These are the must-use items for Runecrafting:

• Rune Essence: This is a raw material that is used to create runes. Unlike magic runes, they are not stackable and will fill your inventory. Therefore, you will need to make bank runs from and to altars. F2P players can mine them after completing Rune Mysteries. To teleport to the mine, talk to Aubury.
• Pure Essence: The pure essence is a much better version of the basic variation. This type will create more runes per inventory generating more XP, so it’s recommended to use over the regular pure essence. To gain access to pure essence, you’ll first have to complete the Rune Mysteries quest.
• Talisman: A talisman is used to reach inside an altar to create runes. Without one, players won’t receive an option to enter. Each talisman is attuned to a specific altar. For example, a water talisman will only let you enter a water altar location. Also, not all talisman are accesible for F2P players:

  • Tiara: The tiara can act as an equipable talisman granting you access to the mysterious ruins. They will save you an extra inventory slot, which will increase profits and experience per hour. To create a Runecrafting tiara, combine the selected talisman and a tiara. However, you can purchase them from the Grand Exchange.

Useful Runcrafting Items

Since Runecrafting is an ultra-slow skill using any items to speed up the process is necessary. These items will provide convenience and make the skill more bearable. Therefore, spending the extra GP and time to obtain these items will help you in the long run.

• Runecrafting Pouches: These are bags that can be used to store rune or pure essence. They are highly regarded in the Runecrafting community because they can be used to take larger loads when mining or creating runes. Pouches are dropped by monsters in the Abyss. Unfortunately, the pouches will decay after a certain amount of uses. Also, Runecrafting pouches come in 4 sizes and have level requirements:

    • Runecrafting Level: 1
    • Capacity: 3
    • Decay: None
  • Medium Pouch:
    • Runecrafting Level: 25
    • Capacity: 6
    • Decay: 45 Uses
  • Large Pouch:
    • Runecrafting Level: 50
    • Capacity: 9
    • Decay: 29 Uses
  • Giant Pouch:
    • Runecrafting Level: 75
    • Capacity: 12
    • Decay: 11 Uses

Furthermore, players cannot have more than 1 type of a Runecrafting Pouch in their inventory. However, this does mean you can have all 4 pouches in your inventory, which provides a total of 30 extra essence.

• Ring of Dueling: When crafting fire or lava runes, the duel arena teleport from the ring of dueling is beneficial. This lets you quickly bank your items and run back to the altar.
• Amulet of Glory: When doing Abyss runs, having an amulet of glory can significantly improve XP rates. The amulet will teleport you next to the Edgeville bank.
• High-level Logs: The balloon transport system can do certain methods faster, which requires high-level logs. You can refer to our Firemaking guide to see how to use the balloons.
• Graceful Outfit: Runecrafting requires a lot of running between banks and altars. Therefore, the graceful outfit can become super helpful. The clothing will reduce your weight and let your run for longer. The complete set will put your weight at -25kg and increase run energy restoration rate by 20%.
• Stamina Potions: These potions will replenish your energy so that you can run for longer. Players can buy them from the GE or make them with level 77 Herblore.
• Pickaxe: If you plan to do Abyss runs wielding a pickaxe can speed up the process. This is because to enter the inner circles of the Abyss, you’ll need to mine through some rocks.

Runecrafting Quests

As Runecrafting is most likely the slowest skill in OSRS, it’s important to gather experience from anywhere you can. The best method to receive experience at the early levels is by completing quests. We’ve selected these quests because they have minimal requirements or will help your character within Gielinor.

• Rune Mysteries: 0 Runecrafting Experience
• The Ascent of Arceuus: 500 Runecrafting Experience
• Enter the Abyss: 1,000 Runecrafting Experience
• Lunar Diplomacy: 5,000 Runecrafting Experience
• The Eyes of Glouphire: 6,000 Runecrafting Experience

Completing these quests will give you 12,500 Runecrafting experience and will put you at level 29. If you’re not the questing type of player, we’ll go into alternate methods. However, you must complete Rune Mysteries and Enter the Abyss because they are used for the best training methods.

How To Train Runecrafting

Luckily training Runecrafting is not a complicated process. First, you’ll need to gather supplies so that you don’t waste trips to the Grand Exchange. Make sure that you have these items in your bank:

• Pure essence
• All variations of talisman or tiaras
• Rune pouches
• Teleportation methods such as a ring of dueling and amulet of glory

The next step is to equip a tiara or place a talisman in your inventory. Then fill your inventory and rune pouches (if you have them) with pure essence. Afterward, you’ll need to head to a mysterious ruin and use the talisman or tiara to teleport inside. Mysterious ruins are located all around Gielinor, and you’ll need the correct corresponding talisman or tiara to enter.

Each type of rune will require a Runecrafting level requirement:

• Level 1 – Air Rune
• Level 2 – Mind Rune
• Level 5 – Water Rune
• Level 9 – Earth Rune
• Level 14 – Fire Rune
• Level 20 – Body Rune
• Level 27 – Cosmic Rune
• Level 35 – Chaos Rune
• Level 40 – Astral Rune
• Level 44 – Nature Rune
• Level 54 – Law Rune
• Level 65 – Death Rune
• Level 77 – Blood Rune
• Level 90 – Soul Rune
• Level 95 – Wrath Rune

Once you are inside the mysterious ruins, you’ll see an altar in the middle. Use the pure essence on the altar, and your player will begin the process. Afterward, you will gain Runecrafting experience and the magic runes.

Also, as players increase their Runecrafting level, they can create more runes from a single inventory. However, no extra XP is granted for creating more runes because the system is based on how many essences you use.

Furthermore, Runecrafting features combination runes. To craft them, players need to take existing runes with a matching talisman and pure essence. Then go to an altar that will compromise as the other half of the combination. For example, if you want to make lava runes, you’ll need to bring earth runes with a fire and earth tiara. Then click on the altar to create lava runes.

• Dust Runes: Air + Earth Runes

Runecrafting Altar Locations

Mysterious ruins are located all around the map. Each ruin requires a specific tiara or talisman to enter, which will then teleport you inside.

• Air Altar: Northeastern of the Crafting Guild and South of Falador.
• Ourania Altar: Southwest of West Ardougne inside the Ourania Cave.
• Mind Altar: Between Gobling Village and the Ice Mountain.
• Water Altar: Southeastern of Draynor Village and South of Lumbridge Swamp.
• Earth Altar: Northeastern of Varrock, not far from Lumber Yard.
• Fire Altar: West of the Duel Arena and Northeastern of Al Kharid.
• Body Altar: South of Edgeville Monastery, between the Ice Mountain and Barbarian Village.
• Cosmic Altar: The Southen section of Zanaris.
• Chaos Altar: Northwest of Edgeville at level 9 Wilderness.
• Astral Altar: The South section of Lunar Isle.
• Nature Altar: Directly North of Shilo Village.
• Law Altar: The Northern part of Entrana.
• Death Altar: At the bottom floor of the Temple of Light. Also, players can access this location from the Underground Pass.
• Blood Altar: Directly South of the Dark Altar in Arceuus.
• Soul Altar: Directly East of the Dark Altar in Arceuus.
• Wrath Altar: South of the Myths’ Guild through the Corsair Cove Dungeon.

F2P Level 1-99 OSRS Runecrafting Guide

Levels 1-9: Air Runes

In F2P, the best method to reach level 9 Runecrafting is by creating air runes. Equip an air tiara and head to the Eastern bank in Falador. Fill your inventory with pure essence and run directly South outside the walls. You’ll notice the mysterious ruins that will take you to the air altar. Each air rune grants 5 Runecrafting experience, and a full inventory will provide 140 XP. You’ll need 194 pure essences to reach level 9.

Levels 9-14: Earth Runes

From levels 9-14, you’ll be creating earth runes. Fill your inventory at the Eastern bank in Varrock. Then run east outside the walls of Varrock and head Northeastern along the path until you see the mysterious ruins. A helpful transport method for this location is using Varrock teleport tablets.

Levels 14-20: Fire Runes

Fire runes provide 7 XP, which translates to 196 Runecrafting experience per inventory. The fire altar is West of the Duel Arena. This method is super fast because the bank is nearby. You’ll need to use 338 pure essences to reach level 20 Runecrafting.

Levels 20-99: Mind Runes

Mind Runes provide the best experience for F2P players. Each body rune delivers 7.5 RC experience, and a full inventory is 210 XP. Body runes are used for a number of utility spells, which means they are in high demand. From levels 20-99 Runecrafting, you’ll make a profit of around 24 million GP.

The quickest method to create runes is to start at the Edgeville bank and run Southwest. The mysterious ruins is located directly West of the Barbarian Village Bar.

Levels 29-99: Lava Runes

Due to the fire altar being so close to a bank creating lava runes is the best source of Runecrafting experience in OSRS. To make lava runes, you’ll need to bring pure essence, earth runes, and an earth tiara to the fire altar.

The mysterious ruin is directly West of the Duel Arena bank. Make sure to equip a ring of dueling and use the Duel Arena teleport to get to the bank quickly. This method will generate 50-70 Runecrafting experiences per hour, depending on if you use rune pouches.

Alternative – Levels 1 or 23-99: Ourania Altar

Unlike other altars, the Ourania altar will turn your pure essence into random runes. There are no requirements for doing this method, and you can start from level 1 Runecrafting if you’d like. However, having a higher RC level will increase your chances of obtaining more valuable runes, which will improve XP rates.

Getting to the altar is easy if you use the Ourania teleport from the lunar spellbook. This requires you to complete Lunar Diplomacy and have level 71 Magic. Alternatively, you can use the Ardougne teleport and run there.

Profitable Level 1-99 OSRS Runecrafting Guide

Levels 1-29: Questing

The best Runecrafting money-making methods begin at level 44. Therefore, you’ll want to gain as much experience quickly, and the best method is with questing.

• Rune Mysteries
• The Ascent of Arceuus
• Enter the Abyss
• Lunar Diplomacy
• The Eyes of Glouphire

These quests are important to complete as they are required to help progress your character. Rune Mysteries and Enter the Abyss are must-do quests because they will give you access to the fastest money-making methods.

Levels 29-44: Fire Runes

Creating fire runes till level 44 Runecrafting will generate a small profit. This method is ideal because the altar is located West of the duel arena. Therefore, you can use the ring of dueling to teleport to the Duel Arena bank quickly and run back to the altar.

Levels 44-95: The Abyss

The next 3 methods will require you to have access to the Abyss. This will require the completion of Enter the Abyss, which is a short quest. Once you are done, head to the Edgeville bank and fill your inventory with pure essence, an amulet of glory, the corresponding talisman, and a pickaxe.

Here’s how to complete the run:

1. Fill your inventory with supplies.
2. Then run directly North into the Wilderness until you see the Mage of Zamorak.
3. Right-click him and select teleport to go inside the Abyss
4. Next, you need to go to the middle of the Abyss by mining out the rocks and going through the tunnels.
5. Once you are in the center, you’ll notice various runes inside the walls, selecting the corresponding rune you’d like to create. You’ll be teleported to the altar.
6. Now you can create the runes and gain Runecrafting XP.
7. Then use the amulet of glory and teleport to Edgeville bank.
8. Lastly, repeat the process until you hit your Runecrafting goals.

Levels 44-59: Nature Runes

Levels 59-91: Double Cosmic Runes

Levels 91-95: Double Nature Runes

At level 91 Runecrafting, you’ll be able to make twice as many nature runes from a single inventory. This means you’ll be making 1m GP per hour consistently. Although the XP rates are extremely slow, being at 25k per hour, you’ll generate millions until level 95.

Level 95-99: Wrath Runes

Wrath runes are the best for-profit and experience in OSRS. Depending on your efficiency, you can generate 1 to 1.5 million GP per hour along with 30k Runecrafting experience. To gain access to this training method, you’ll need to complete Dragon Slayer II.

Wrath runes are always in high demand because they are used for surge spells, which are the most powerful elemental attacks in the standard spellbook. The fastest way to craft wrath runes is by using the mythical cape teleport to travel to the Myths’ Guild. Enter the guild basement and run past the aggressive dragons to enter the cave with the wrath altar.
