Within the wonderful expansive world of Old School RuneScape, there are a wide variety of creatures that realm the landscape, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, attributes, abilities, quirks, and personalities. Plus, most importantly their own personal loot drops make it worthwhile for hunters to go out and slay these beasts. There are tonnes of bosses and base creatures in this long-running MMORPG, to the point that keeping up with the masses of content can become a struggle.
The number of beasts to keep track of can be overwhelming and that is why we have put together a series of essential handbooks, breaking down each and every creature and boss within the Old School RS universe and giving you all the info you could possibly need about them, such as related quest guides, strategies for taking down these beasts and the best equipment for the job.
In this Kraken Slayer guide, we take a look at The Kraken, a boss variant of the normal enemy type, the Cave Kraken. This boss is a water-based creature that offers a challenge for those on the upper end of intermediate in terms of skill level but with our guide, you make them look like a teddy bear. We’ll show you if you need RS gold, how to be a Kraken slayer master, and more. Without further delay, here is our essential handbook for the OSRS Kraken boss.
What is The Kraken In OSRS?
The Kraken is a boss that one can fight in OSRS. This boss is a stronger variant of the normal enemy type, the Cave Kraken, and offers a much tougher challenge. In terms of appearance, this monster looks like a giant octopus, minus about five legs. This huge sea creature kind of looks like a slug, with a body that looks slimy and takes on an unsightly snot green color. Then the underbelly is a grey color as are the three tentacles that protrude from the large body of the beast. The creature also has two large antennae on its head in place of eyes. It is a blind creature but uses its antennae to feel vibrations and smell its prey. Then the design is capped off with a huge round mouth with a collection of spiky teeth inside.
As for the stats belonging to this boss variant, players will need to have a slayer level of 87 to take on this beast, the Kraken has a combat level of 291, a max hit of 28, and offers the player 255XP for each successful kill. Here is a full rundown of the Kraken’s stats in OSRS:
- Combat level: 291
- Slayer Level required: 87
- Max hit 28
- Attack speed: 4
- HP: 255
- Ranged attacks: 300
- Magic attacks: 130
Where is the Kraken Located in OSRS?
The Kraken is located in an area known as Kraken Cove. This Cove is located within Kandarin which is close to the Piscatoris Fishing Colony which is just located southwest of the cove. This Location is not only the home of the Kraken and Cave Kraken. It also plays host to Waterfiends, a combat level 115 foe that can also be killed as part of a slayer task. While this cove can be accessed at any time, it is best to go with the intention of killing the monsters within and to do so, you will need to have an active slayer task. Without this, an NPC called Lieve McCracken will stop you from harming the creatures.
You can obviously make your way here on foot but there are several ways that you can get to the cove in rapid time. The first is with the use of a fairy ring. With the code ADQ, the player will find themselves just to the east of the cove and they can walk over. Or alternatively, you can use Piscatoris teleport scroll to teleport to the aforementioned Fishing colony. Either will save you time and effort, making the upcoming fight less stressful overall.
Do You Need an Active Quest to Battle The Kraken?
As mentioned, you do not need an active quest to travel to Kraken Cove and see the Kraken. However, to fight this beast, you will need to have an active slayer quest allowing you to take on this huge sea monster. You don’t need to have a specific Kraken task and as long as you have the active slayer quest set as Cave Krakens, you will be able to fight this boss variant. It is also worth noting again that you must be level 87 to access this slayer task and this also subsequently requires the player to have at least fifty magic.
Is This an Instanced Boss Battle?
This boss battle is a little bit of an anomaly as the player will have a choice of whether to play this battle out in an instanced arena or in a group server arena. The benefit of battling this boss in an instanced environment is that all the loot that is earned at the end of the battle is yours to keep as only you can access this area. However, the benefit of going as a group is that you can share the burdens of battle and you will be able to take down the Kraken much more quickly and efficiently.
Another benefit of the instanced battle is that your items will be stored in an unmarked gravestone outside the battle arena, meaning that even if you die, you won’t lose your items permanently. However, in a group environment, you will lose all but your three most valuable items upon death. So if you go it alone, there is less risk of losing your belongings permanently. However, it’s important to remember that items left in the grave when you die a second time will be lost for good, so don’t forget to track back.
Is There a Normal Variant of This Monster?
Yes, the normal variant of this boss is the Cave Kraken. These creatures have a combat level of 128, have a max hit of 13, have an attack speed of six and offer the player 125XP for each successful kill. The player will also need to have a slayer level of 87 to take on these beasts. Here are the stats for these underwater pests:
HP: 125
Defense: 150
Magic: 120
*other stats are 1 unless listed.
In terms of appearance, this creature is identical in color scheme and design when compared to the boss variant. The only difference is that Cave Kraken’s are only 2×2 tiles in size, making them much smaller than their boss counterpart. These creatures can only be bested with magical attacks as melee is useless and ranged attacks do very little damage. To fight one of these beasts, you need to disturb a whirlpool within the Kraken Cave. Then the monster will surface from the deep and attack. However, if you are keen on farming these monsters for loot, we would strongly urge against it as the cost of runes isn’t worth the loot available.
Does The Kraken Have Any Immunities?
Yes, the Kraken has an immunity to all poison attacks and not only does it also have immunity to venom attacks as well. It also converts these to poison and can use them against the player. So if you were planning to approach this battle with status effects and slow but effective strategies to whittle down the Kraken’s HP, we are afraid that it simply won’t work. Plus, you will be giving the Kraken ammunition to use against you. You really want to focus on magic attacks above all else but we will get to that in a moment.
What Stats Do You Need Before You Take on The Kraken?
This depends on the way that you go about this fight. Firstly, we would suggest that you have reasonably high combat stats, however, these are not strictly necessary as the battle will only really involve you using magic attacks. What you do need is a level 75 magic stat that allows you to equip the right staves. Plus, it can be very helpful to have your prayer stat above 50 to help with dodging some attacks that the Kraken throws your way. However, you will need to have an imbued Heart to preserve prayers or use Augury or mystic light as Kraken’s moves are typeless.
Also, it is worth mentioning that having access to the fairy ring network is the best way to cut travel time when heading to Kraken Cove, so be sure to at least partially complete the quest, Fairytale II – Cure a Queen before you after the Kraken.
Here is a rundown of the key stats that you should aim for before you go after the Kraken:
HP: 70+
Defense: 70+
Magic: 75+
Prayer: 50+

These can be replenished from fight to fight as the Kraken will often drop these food items.
How to Defeat The Kraken – Strategy
Now that you are kitted out and ready for the battle at hand, it’s time to discuss how to win this fight. To begin this fight, you will have to get the Kraken to rise from the depths. There are two ways to go about this. If you have a fishing explosive, if you place this in the largest whirlpool, the Kraken will rise up straight away and the battle will begin. However, if you don’t have an explosive to hand, don’t panic, as you can simply attach the four smaller whirlpools and then the largest whirlpool which will also be the fight.
It is worth mentioning that no matter which method you use to engage the Kraken, the four enormous tentacle enemies will still rise from the smaller whirlpools. These enemies have a combat level of 112, have a max hit of 2 and these enemies are very accurate, so even though they don’t hit hard, the damage builds up as the battle rages on.
For this reason, we would urge the player to take out these lesser enemies when the battle begins. This is to stop damage building up over time but also because the Kraken’s ranged magic attack isn’t very accurate and only happens once every four seconds, making it easy to anticipate and avoid.
Once you take out the Enormous Tentacles, move into the center of the room and focus on the Kraken. This monster will continually use its one typeless attack style throughout so there is no need to adjust your playstyle throughout. Simply equip your best magic-based attacks and go to town on the monster and eventually, they will fall.
In truth, this boss fight is one of the easiest intermediate challenges in the game. As long as you meet the requirements, bring the right gear and manage the lesser enemy threats effectively, this boss will give you no trouble at all. However, for this reason, this boss is a very popular one and it can be a real struggle to find an empty server that allows you to farm this creature.
To deal with this issue, consider using the aforementioned ability to make this battle take place in an instanced area. This will allow you to fight this beast alone, reap the spoils of battle with no other players hovering over your shoulder and will also mean that if you die, your items are somewhat protected. Just bear in mind that this will cost you 25,000 gold for the privilege but it’s a small price to pay for peace and quiet. Minus the raging sea monster of course.

So if you followed the guide to the letter, you should be standing atop a pile of loot and the Kraken should be vanquished. Can You Get A Pet Kraken?
Yes, as there is with many other bosses within OSRS, there is an opportunity to acquire a small, cute, and cuddly version of this boss as your own companion. The pet Kraken is a drop that is rewarded for beating the boss and the chances of receiving this reward are 3000/1. This is one of two pets that can be taken underwater and is currently the most owned pet in the entire game, undoubtedly due to the popularity of the boss fight. At the time of writing, about 70K players own a Pet Kraken.
How Many Times Can I Kill The Kraken In One Hour?
This depends on how skilled of a warrior that you are. However, assuming that you know this battle well and are of a decent skill level, you can expect to kill the Kraken about 60-70 times in one hour. However, with maximum efficiency and a very high skill level, you could potentially kill this monster 90 times within one hour. If you manage this, you would see an average profit of 1.5 million gold per hour.
A Kraken Good Time
As you can see from the information above, the Kraken is a very manageable boss for intermediate players, doesn’t have a lot of requirements to take on and best of all. This creature has some great loot to offer any warrior that dares to take them on. It’s a fun fight that is well worth the time and effort so if you haven’t run into this giant sea monster, maybe pop into Kraken Cove and say hello.
